Appliance Based Firewall

This scenario is recommended for businesses with the following Internet requirements:

bullet

All (or specified) workstations and servers need access to the Internet

bullet

No connection from the Internet is permitted to access the LAN

bullet

Company e-mail and web site is located offsite at the ISP (Internet Service Provider) premises.

To resolve the above client's needs, a router with integrated firewall is put in between the Internet and the client's LAN.

The router provides communications between the Internet and the LAN, while the firewall in the router controls data flow, permitting data from the LAN to the Internet and restricting all traffic originating from the Internet to access the LAN.

This basic type of solution is very flexible. The scenario can be scaled up to thousands of users by installing a more powerful router and firewall. This solution also supports a wide variety of modern Internet connections including ADSL, Cable, ISDN, and ATM.
